Every construction project starts with some demo. Whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom or a full blown home renovation, your going to be knocking down, ripping out or reducing to rubble something on the project. Got to get rid of the old before you can start building the new, that’s just the way it is.
Here’s the rub though, in the course of getting rid of all the old, there are some old things you do not want to touch. Take this home renovation we’re doing in Malibu, to get ready to start building the new yard design we first needed to demo the old front yard. This meant getting out all the old dying trees and existing landscaping. But the danger here when removing large trees is that if you aren’t careful and dig too deep, you can hit underground pipes, which can be expensive to replace not to mention bring the whole project to a grinding halt.
So we are careful not to dig too deep around the big trees, and instead of trying to hook up a chain to the stumps and pull them out (along with any plumbing that may be near) what we do is pay a little extra and have someone with a stump grinder come in and just grind the stumps down below ground level.
This way we get rid of the trees we don’t want without taking any chances of destroying underground pipes. This takes a little bit more time to do, but in the long run, the peace of mind knowing we won’t be having to dig up the whole front yard repairing under ground pipes is worth the extra effort.
